Don’t be surprised if words fail you when you arrive in Dubrovnik, the gleaming “Pearl of the Adriatic”. From any angle it’s beautiful – rusty orange rooftops snuggle up to dense woodland, the limestone paving of the Stradun is slick and sparkly under evening lights, and from the city walls you can gaze out over the Adriatic dancing blue and green below.

A good place to start a Dubrovnik holiday is in the old town, where you can dip in and out of chic shops, cafes and bars from its main stretch, the Stradun, before climbing to the top of its ancient walls to look out at the sprawling rooftops below. A great spot to cool down in summer is inside the city’s magnificent cathedral, and keep your eyes peeled for the tucked-away Buza bars through the old town walls too, where you can enjoy a drink on the rocks overlooking the sea and watch brave locals and tourists diving in.

Sitting at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, in southern Croatia, centuries-old Dubrovnik allows you to combine a beach and a city break. Complement a morning sightseeing with an afternoon spent on the pebbly Banje Beach, the closest beach to the old town, or head out to the Lapad peninsular for sandy and pebbly stretches.

If you’d rather take to the water to explore, consider hiring a sea kayak or booking onto a sea kayak tour to see the city from a new perspective before finding a quiet beach to relax on.

When to go to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s Mediterranean climate gives this southern tip of Croatia mild winters and long, sunny summers. Expect temperatures to reach around 28C during afternoons in July and August.

Spring and autumn are great times for sightseeing trips to Dubrovnik and for cheaper holiday prices than in the peak summer season. During these months, days are warm – with averages of 18C in May and October – and visitor numbers are down from the busy summer months.

Temperatures in winter rarely dip below 5C and days can be pleasantly warm when the sun shines. However, many hotels, restaurants and attractions will be closed so do your research before planning a trip.

Cruise crowds can swell the city’s population by hundreds within minutes. So, whatever time of year you go, get up early and see Dubrovnik in the splendid morning light when it feels like the city is all yours.
