1. Fuerteventura, Spain

Increase in searches since July: 260.3%

Fuerteventura clinched the top spot on Holiday Hotlist this month, partly driven by an overwhelming increase in TravelSupermarket searches in August compared to July. The 260.3% spike was the biggest of any destination, crowning the Canary Island gem as the most on-trend getaway right now.

With more than 150 beaches to pick from, you’re spoilt for choice on holidays to Fuerteventura. Whether you’re taking the family to Playa El Castillo, snorkelling at Playa de la Concha or windsurfing at Playa de Sotavento, you’ll be treated to warm temperatures all year round.

Incredible volcanic scenery and wind-sculpted sand dunes provide the backdrop for your days on the beach, while boat trips for dolphin-spotting or visiting the uninhabited Isla de Lobos are fantastic activities away from the sand.

2. Barcelona area, Spain

Increase in searches since July: 238.2%

As summer draws to a close, the prospect of a city break becomes all the more appealing. But few are as appealing as Barcelona, one of the few places where you can combine city exploration with time on the beach. And it’s definitely a destination of interest to TravelSupermarket users right now, with searches up by 238.2%.

The Catalan capital is a trove of sensational architecture, from the iconic Sagrada Familia to the medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter. Yet arguably the most impressive aspect of Barcelona is how this urban sprawl seamlessly gives way to a glorious beach. Barceloneta Beach is a vibrant hub of locals and tourists, and is bathed in sunshine about 300 days a year.

Away from the city, you’ll find stunning, quieter beaches across the wider Barcelona area like Playa de Sitges and Playa de Castelldefels.

3. Rhodes, Greece

Increase in searches since July: 161.9%

Another destination very much on the radar for TravelSupermarket users right now is Rhodes, which saw a 161.9% rise in searches in August compared to July.

This cracking Greek island gets sun over 300 days a year and is peppered with beaches of all shapes and sizes. Check out the rustic, rocky outcrops of Anthony Quinn Bay, a snorkelling paradise, dodge the crowds on the pebbly Stegna Beach or leap from the diving board at Elli Beach in Rhodes Town.

The old town itself is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe; fascinating history is another of Rhodes’ draws. The likes of Monolithos Castle and Acropolis of Lindos also make for enchanting days out.

4. Lanzarote, Spain

Increase in searches since July: 143.1%

The Canary Islands are attractive all year round, but they come into their own during shoulder season and the winter. While many other nearby destinations cool down, the Canaries stay warm. So it’s no surprise that Lanzarote also features among our top trending destinations in September, with searches up more than 140%.

The island’s eastern and southern coasts are home to its best beaches and most popular resorts. Among the best is the horseshoe-shaped Playa del Jablillo in Costa Teguise and the striking white-sand Playa del Reducto in Arrecife, an urban beach renowned for its cleanliness and water quality.

There’s plenty more to see and do away from the beaches too, like the otherworldly volcanic terrain of Timanfaya National Park and the unique wine-growing region of La Geria.

5. Malta

Increase in searches since July: 117.7%

Malta is another destination that is blessed with sunshine beyond the summer months, so it’s understandable that TravelSupermarket users are beginning to explore it with more vigour right now. Searches were up by over 100%, and it was also named as the cheapest beach destination right now.

Its ancient history, dramatically rugged coastline and impossibly clear waters make it a genuinely unique European beach holiday destination. To the north-east of the island, Qawra has a plethora of stylish hotels and is a popular spot for an all-inclusive holiday. Mellieħa, where you’ll find one of only a few sandy beaches, is a family favourite along with Buġibba, which has an equally appealing artificial beach.

Evenings here can be spent exploring the UNESCO-listed capital city of Valletta, a labyrinth of golden alleys and architectural marvels, or the lively nightlife hub of St Julian's.

The slow-paced, neighbouring island of Gozo is worth considering for a truly tranquil break, with its scenic oceanside trails, megalithic temples and rocky coves.

6. Dalaman area, Turkey

Increase in searches since July: 69.1%

Turkey’s beach destinations may have dropped slightly in the Holiday Hotlist rankings this month, but they remain an attractive option and very much on-trend. Searches for the Dalaman area were up 33.2%.

Making up part of Turkey’s majestic Turquoise Coast, the Dalaman area is flanked by the imposing Taurus Mountains and the glistening Aegean Sea. Renowned for its all-inclusive holidays, there are endless sun-drenched beachfront resorts here.

Head to Marmaris to sip cocktails and gaze over sweeping blue bays, with a backdrop of pine-clad hills. Summers here are long and hot, with temperatures climbing well above 30°C and the sun shining 12 hours a day.

Fethiye offers an appealing blend of new and old, with modern resorts set close to the ancient Lycian city of Telmessos and a beautiful natural harbour. Nearby Olu Deniz is famed for its magnificent Blue Lagoon, and despite the postcard-perfect scenery here, holiday prices tend to be affordable.

7. Tenerife, Spain

Increase in searches since July: 67.7%

A third Canary Island to feature among our top trending destinations at the moment, Tenerife is also flying the flag for shoulder season and winter sun escapes as searches rose by over 67% in August.

Breathtaking volcanic vistas, idyllic beaches and buzzy bars are all part of the Tenerife package, and there are a variety of resorts to pick from across the island.

Playa de las Americas has long, sandy beaches, lush golf courses, and some of the liveliest nightlife, while Costa Adeje is more upmarket and a hotspot for luxury hotels. Los Cristianos is a top pick for families with its sheltered beach and proximity to the famous Siam Park waterpark and Los Gigantes is arguably the most spectacular with black-sand beaches and craggy volcanic cliffs.

8. Egypt

Increase in searches since July: 49.8%

As expected, winter sun hotspots feature heavily among the trending destinations in September, and few can rival the temperatures in Egypt. So it’s no surprise that the number of TravelSupermarket searches rose by almost 50% in August.

From the famous pyramids of Giza in Cairo to the year-round sun and world-class snorkelling in the Red Sea, Egypt is a treasure trove of unforgettable holidays.

Families flock to Hurghada for its waterparks, boat trips, desert safaris and more, not to mention its spectacular beaches with shallow waters and breathtaking coral reefs. To sample Egypt’s storied past, take a day trip back in time to Luxor, located on the sunny banks of the River Nile and dubbed the world’s largest open-air museum.

Close to Hurghada, El Gouna is one of the most esteemed resorts in Egypt, with tranquil lagoons, idyllic islands and upscale restaurants that contribute to a lively yet premium nightlife scene.

Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab and Marsa Alam are further leading resorts to consider, typified by glorious sandy beaches, scorching temperatures and magical sea life.

9. Santorini, Greece

Increase in searches since July: 40.1%

Early autumn in Santorini brings temperatures of around 25°C and, generally, cheaper deals too. TravelSupermarket users are definitely onto something, with searches up by more than 40% in August.

Dark volcanic cliffs peppered with white houses make it one of the most recognisable Greek islands. Its beaches are as unusual as they are beautiful, with black, red, and white sands creating a mesmerising multi-coloured coastline.

If you’re wondering where to stay, families love Perissa and Kamari, the former offering a wider variety of hotels, apartments and restaurants and the latter being a slightly quieter option. Both have links to Fira, which is the best spot for nightlife with its variety of cocktail bars and nightclubs. Oia, meanwhile, is the atmospheric setting for sunset-watching and a hub of award-winning local cuisine.

Santorini is also home to some of the oldest vineyards in Greece. Take a day trip to the island’s southern interior and sip on crisp white wines under the setting sun.

10. Kefalonia, Greece

Increase in searches since July: 21.8%

Kefalonia is a third Greek island to feature among the top trending holidays in September, and while not quite as significant as its neighbours, a 21.8% increase in searches is the hallmark of an in-demand destination.

The largest Ionian island offers a more peaceful ambience than many of its counterparts. If you’re travelling as a couple, consider chic Fiskardo with its pastel-painted houses, or Assos which is near Myrtos, one of the island’s best beaches.

And there are resorts to suit every type of traveller in Kefalonia, from family-friendly Skala, characterised by its long, sheltered beach and shallow waters, to Lassi which is a scuba diver’s paradise.

Experiences here are as varied as the resorts, so you won’t be short of things to do if you can drag yourself away from your hotel pool. Hire a bike and cycle through mountain forests to spot wild horses, hike to the breathtaking summit of Mount Ainos (stopping to sample the finest local wines on its lower slopes), or explore Old Vlachata, an eerie, abandoned village.
