Benalmadena This Spanish town is one of the cheapest places to fly to this winter.

With accommodation and flight prices at their most competitive, winter is a fantastic time to score a cheap holiday. But the million dollar question is: where’s cheapest to visit this year?

We’ve done the maths at TravelSupermarket HQ to reveal the cheapest winter holiday destinations departing from UK airports, considering both three-night city breaks and week-long winter sun getaways.

Whether you’re taking off from London or Leeds, here’s where to go this winter for sightseeing and sunbathing on the cheap.

The cheapest destinations from London airports

Flying from one of London’s major airports? Krakow is your cheapest destination for a city break, averaging just £215pp for a three-night stay. With beautiful Christmas markets and hearty fare, it's a tough one to beat for festive feels.

Sharing second place, Budapest and Berlin both come in at £250pp. If there was a prime time to see their most magnificent landmarks without the crowds, winter would be it.

Any sun seekers will want to make a beeline for Olu Deniz. Costing £225pp for a seven-night getaway and with winter highs averaging around 16C, this Turquoise Coast resort hits the spot for both budget and weather.

Stick with Turkey and all-inclusive family-favourite Alanya is the next cheapest winter sun destination from London, followed by Hammamet in Tunisia. A week’s holiday will set you back £281pp and £315pp respectively.

The cheapest destinations from Manchester Airport

Krakow keeps its lead as a budget-friendly short break for those flying from Manchester, with three nights averaging £225pp. And there’s no change in the second spot either as Budapest slides in just under the £245pp mark.

Paris, in third, comes in just a few pounds more at £247pp on average. Seeing the Eiffel Tower twinkling beneath a starry winter sky is definitely one for the bucket list.

Seeking sun instead? Benalmadena is your best bet for a cheap sunshine hit. You’ll pay around £481pp for a seven-night holiday – an absolute steal for one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular beach resorts.

You’ll find great value deals to Lara in Turkey and Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife from Manchester too, both with their fair share of warm sand and sparkling seas.

The cheapest destinations from Liverpool Airport

Liverpool Airport flyers will also find that Krakow is the best option for a cheap city break this winter. The price of a three-night holiday here is similar to Manchester, averaging £237pp (that’s £12 more expensive).

Amsterdam takes second place, averaging £286pp. Whether you go for the cosy cafés, canals or Christmas lights, the Netherlands capital and winter city breaks are a well-matched pair. Prague is no stranger to a cheap city break round-up (largely thanks to its cheap pints and accommodation), so it’s no surprise that it slides into Liverpool’s third cheapest spot, costing £304pp on average.

Sousse in Tunisia is your winter sun winner from Liverpool. Spend a week alternating between sunbathing, shopping and sightseeing for around £290pp.

The sunshine and cheap deals continue in Albufeira, where you’ll pay just over £375pp. Tenerife follows suit, with Puerto de la Cruz in third. Granted, it’s just over £100pp more expensive than the Algarve at £488pp, but with some of the warmest winter temperatures in Europe, it’s worth it.

The cheapest destinations from Newcastle Airport

For a cheap city break flying from Newcastle, look no further than Benidorm. Averaging £267pp, it's a great option for a coastal culture hit. Spend your mornings exploring the historic Old Town and afternoons stretching your legs along Llevant Beach.

Or for something more festive, Krakow and Amsterdam offer budget-friendly deals around £300pp.

Any Geordies looking to top up their tan should concentrate their holiday search on Fuerteventura. Morro Jable is the cheapest winter sun destination with a week’s getaway costing you about £339pp on average. Its long, strawberry-blonde beach is blissfully uncrowded in the low season, ideal if you’re after some peace and quiet following Christmas.

Malta and Tenerife complete the top three, with St Paul’s Bay coming in at £388pp and Puerto de la Cruz costing £604pp. You’ll find sunshine and fantastic resorts in both.

The cheapest destinations from Leeds Airport

Take off on a city break from Leeds this winter and – surprise, surprise – you’ll get the most for your money in Krakow. At £263pp, you’ll pay £31pp less than Newcastle but £38pp more than Manchester to fly to the Polish city from Leeds.

Not far behind, Benidorm is your next cheapest pick (£325pp) and Prague rounds up the list, coming in around the £410pp mark.

Prefer sun over city? Agadir is your answer. Located on Morocco’s south coast and sheltered by the Atlas Mountains, it boasts temperatures in the low twenties even in January. Even better? It tops the cheap list at £413pp on average.

Alternatively, look to Puerto de la Cruz or Puerto del Carmen in the Canaries for an affordable week in the sun. The latter is one of Lanzarote’s most popular resorts (think multiple beaches, watersports and restaurants).

The cheapest destinations from Edinburgh Airport

Krakow, Benidorm and Budapest continue to fly the flag for cheap city breaks, being the three best options from Edinburgh. Spend four days having your fill of sublime architecture and pierogi dumplings in Krakow for £253pp, or join in the revelry in one of Benidorm or Budapest’s buzzing bars for just over £300pp.

Scots seeking a dose of winter sun should opt for Albufeira. With temperatures hovering pleasantly in the mid-teens and a flight time of just over three hours to the Algarve, winter warmth is within easy reach. Expect a week’s holiday to cost around £395pp.

Elsewhere, consider Sliema – a stylish resort town on Malta’s east coast – or Agadir for a cheap winter sun trip. The cost of a seven-night break averages £455pp and £525pp respectively.

The cheapest destinations from Birmingham Airport

Departing from the Midlands? It’s a clean sweep for Krakow. Coming in at £236pp, it’s the cheapest city break destination from Birmingham Airport this winter, only £21pp more expensive than flying from London.

Those looking for a taste of the dolce vita are in luck as Rome is hot on Krakow’s heels, costing £255pp on average. If you think the price is attractive, wait until you see the city’s stunning landmarks and museums. Winter is a wonderful time to enjoy them without queues or crowds. You’ll also find cheap deals in Paris, averaging £299pp for a three-night holiday.

As for cheap winter sun spots, travellers from Birmingham can take their pick from Spain, Malta and Cyprus for a bargain deal. Morro Jable takes top spot – great news for any beach bums. Averaging £350pp, it’s substantially cheaper than neighbouring resorts on Fuerteventura – a week’s holiday at Caleta de Fuste would set you back £542pp.

Better value and close behind Morro Jable, St Paul’s Bay in Malta cruises into second, with Paphos taking the third cheapest spot, averaging £541pp.
